I work with computers and laptops and this usually means the backlight has gone/inverter board has gone. Now ive stripped the TV down and gotten to the LED strips behind the panel/diffusers etc. There is 8 strips of LEDS, I have tested each LED and marked ones that are short.
If your backlight is working and you have sound, you most likely have a T-Con issue. If your backlight is working, but you do not have sound, you most likely have a main board issue. If your backlight IS working (but you DID NOT see images with the flashlight test) and you HAVE sound: Unplug your TV.
Go on. You can follow the Backlight pcb traces with your eyes. There should be little more than LED + series resistor. Your DMM will determine whether the LED Anode is connected to K or to A pin. Your DMM will tell you the value of the Series resistor. e.g. 0R or 100R. The Contrast pin on most 16x2 displays needs to be "about" 0V.
TV: LG 55GA7900. My TV shows multiple symptoms. When it shows problem, few seconds after turn on the TV, either 1/10 of screen shows shadow (LCD still shows image) that looks like partial backlight out or entire backlight goes off (Still I can see lcd is working when I put flashlight). On the other hand, the TV works just fine sometimes for asPeople report that an Insignia TV goes black and has sound whenever the backlight strip is dead. This is the part responsible for lighting up the pixels in your screen and if it does not work your TV screen will not turn on. You can find an Insignia TV back-light strip for low as $20 and plus the replacement cost you’re looking at $40 at max. mudg.
